This one-hour session provides an introduction to the fundamentals of negotiation, covering key terminology and the foundational principles that guide effective deal-making and conflict resolution. It explores the concept of principled negotiation, emphasizing how interests, options, and objective criteria shape outcomes. Designed as a broad overview, this session sets the stage for future discussions that will delve deeper into specific strategies and techniques. No prior experience is required, making it an accessible starting point for anyone interested in learning the essentials of negotiation.
In collaboration with the Harvard Undergraduate Women in Foreign Policy Club and Harvard Kennedy School Women in Defense, Diplomacy, and Development, this event, part of Harvard College Women's Center's Women's Week, will take place on Thursday, March 6th, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at Ticknor Lounge. This interactive session will begin with a custom-designed negotiation simulation, tailored to the experiences of our featured speaker, former State Department officer Madeline Branch, and created by our club to engage students in realistic, high-stakes decision-making. Following the simulation, Madeline Branch will share insights from her career, offering reflections on navigating complex negotiations, particularly in contexts of low-power dynamics, value-based conflicts, and gender in negotiation. This is a unique opportunity to develop negotiation skills, gain firsthand diplomatic perspectives, and engage in an insightful discussion on the challenges and strategies of women in diplomacy and foreign policy.
